I hold high expectations for watching Little Women. You know, based on the trailer, I will get motivated by feminism controlling own life and moved by “unrealistic romance.”
The music and production design are awesome. But the storytelling is scattered. That from the present, then to the past, then back to the present is totally ok, but trying to make 100%, well 200% portray of all four characters’ personalities and transformations make the audience lose focus.
You’ve spent too much time on telling former part characters’ “loser” lives (for example, Jo argued with the professor about her arrogance on her writing, then taking a train scene being taken by someone, Meg didn’t have money to buy fancy clothes and her husband was sad and went for bed, You don’t have time to tell us what’s behind those struggles ). Anyways, when I was watching it, I got confused with this narrative that I know Jo is the lead character but sometimes Meg and Amy are more important?
However, I cried so much for the latter half. All four girls were like my sisters. Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan had really, really good acting. Every scene Ronan had a distinct emotion that I love her so much (but because of this narrative, Jo looked like different people throughout the movie, at least four, one crazy, one giving hope, one don’t understand love, one regret). So is Chalamet. I clearly know he acts well but the character of a rich, spoiled, young boy who loves and gets heartbroken is very portrayed. Later when he grows up and becomes a father…well… doesn’t make sense!he doesn’t look like one at all…
Anyways, I feel Greta Gerwig is good at directing those movies such as Lady Bird which focus on a specific period of the story. Just let the characters stay the same age throughout the movie. Then it is ok to offer a little revelation or motivation. Gerwig, you are good at helping actors become the character and make he/her live on screen, but not the character change across the lifespan.
Just to be clear, I am looking for a bone in an egg. Little Women is definitely a good movie.
